Diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of structures inside the body. Depending on the examination ordered, ultrasound may help assess abdominal organs, soft tissues, blood flow or other clinical concerns.

During the appointment, a trained sonographer applies gel and moves a transducer over the area being examined. Preparation and referral requirements vary by exam, so patients should follow the instructions provided when booking. Images are reviewed and reported through the appropriate clinical pathway.
